About
Come volunteer at Odd Fellows Cemetery, a historic African American cemetery just 5 minutes from Wake Forest Campus. Participants will help clear brush and expose burials and headstones of the over 9,000 people buried on this 12.5 acre cemetery. Participants will help support the Friends of Odd Fellows Cemetery in their effort to restore the cemetery, while also supporting on-going research by the Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Research Group as they map, document, and research the cemetery and the individuals interred there.
This program will require physical, outdoor work consistent with hard yard work. Participants will be clearing brush, pulling ivy, and carrying loads of debris. The potential scratches from thorny bushes and sticks is possible. It is also possible that participants will encounter ticks and poison ivy and should take precautions before, during, and after the program. We'll talk about this at the site. But because of these factors, please wear and bring the following:
- Wear long sleeved pants and shirts that you don't mind getting dirty.
- Wear close-toed shoes or boots.
- Bring a full water bottle.
- Sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat or head covering is recommended.
